Thanksgiving is fast approaching. Don’t give in to the urge to stay in lounging pants (with elastic). Plan ahead so you can enjoy your holiday meals in a healthy way with the benefits of dairy products. As a registered dietitian, here are some tips I use in meal preparation.
Delicious Holiday Meals with the Benefits of Dairy Products
Pair vegetables with cheese to help ensure you and your guests eat more nutrient-rich sides. Roast vegetables, such as carrots, green beans, broccoli, and cauliflower with herbs, then top with parmesan cheese, or try Roasted Vegetable Potato Salad that can be made the day before.
Use yogurt instead of oils in in your holiday baking to cut back on fat while increasing protein.
Pre-portion sides such as Macaroni & Cheese Casserole Cups to limit calories and to ensure everyone gets a serving!
Remember restrictions, like guests that might have lactose intolerance. Try our Easy Sweet Potato Casserole made with lactose-free milk or pre-portion a Low Fat Chocolate Mousse that is also lactose-free instead of chocolate pie.
Take a 30-minute break before heading to the dessert table to give your stomach time to tell your brain you have eaten. Maybe use that time to take a walk or start a conversation on your family history and bring out the old photos.
Thanksgiving and any holiday is a time to be thankful for loved ones, to reconnect with old friends and enjoy life. Food is part of our tradition, so make each bite special.
