Celebrate the Holiday Season without the Lactose

The Southeast United Dairy Industry Association recently hosted a culinary event for food postgers from the Southeast to showcase just how easy it is to prepare delicious dairy foods for holiday guests with lactose intolerance; and what a fun night it was!

During “Beyond LI” (lactose intolerance), Chef Caitlin Steininger created a custom nine-course tasting menu featuring milk, yogurt and cheese in recipes that are lactose-intolerance friendly. Be sure to check our dairy recipes page in early 2015 for new recipes.

Our guests were surprised to learn that natural aged cheeses, like cheddar and Parmesan, contain little or no lactose, so those with lactose intolerance can enjoy them without worry. In addition, Chef Caitlin used yogurt in many of her dishes and explained to the crowd that the live, active cultures in yogurt help break down lactose, making foods easier to digest by those with lactose intolerance.

To coincide with the holiday season, we offered holiday drinks, including lactose-free hot chocolate and eggnog. Take a look in your dairy aisle—you will be surprised at the variety of lactose-free dairy options.

We had a wonderful kick-off to our holiday season with a delicious and festive evening—and you can, too! Find some inspiration with our lactose-free recipes. How will you celebrate this season?
