Grilled Cheese is a Bite of Happiness

April is National Grilled Cheese Month, and it is bringing the nostalgia with it. Cheese is a required ingredient for every kid’s meal, and a sandwich is no exception. Grilled cheese is the sandwich every kid first experiences with a glass of milk and a deep bowl of soup to use as a dipping sauce. (The bowl may be bigger than your head, but you will use every drop!) Between the Saturday trip to the grocery store that lasts at least 10 hours—ok, maybe it’s really under the hour mark—and the “shopping for clothes” journey that you spend sneaking all the toys into the cart, a grilled cheese comfort is the perfect recovery food for mom’s weekend plans.

In those early days, you watch as a master chef spreads the butter across the bread for a light toasting, flipping the sandwich until the cheese is a fascinating ooey-gooey consistency. Beginning with offering many burned sandwiches to your parents, the art seems tricky at first. However, you come to be entrusted with the process and learn your preference in the toasted bread to melted cheese ratio.

That art shouldn’t be dishonored and forgotten over the years.

Return to your true talent this April. Create the classic grilled cheese that started it all or show how your expertise has grown. There are plenty of ways to make it your own. Build off those early lessons and put cheese on the inside AND outside of your sandwich with a Roast Beef and French Onion Grilled Cheese Sandwich. It’s so ingenious, others will applaud your mastery even before noticing the complement of the horseradish. Or, disguised as a healthy meal, add roasted vegetables to your pan for a Herbed Ricotta and Veggie Grilled Cheese Sandwich that any adult will proudly eat. If looking to show true artistry in the delicacy of cooking, bring finesse to two sandwich classics by putting a twist on the grilled cheese and the filling B.L.T. with a B.K.G.T Griller, combining bacon, kale and tomatoes with smooth gouda. But really, how can you go wrong?
