March is an exciting time for registered dietitians, not only because it is National Nutrition Month, but also that Wednesday, March 11, 2015 is National Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day. The month-long celebration and the daylong observance of health through food and physical activity inspire many to find new ways to become and stay healthy.
This year’s National Nutrition Month theme is “Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle,” but we’re the Southeast Dairy Association…how do you bite into a glass of milk? Cue the inspiration!
Drinking a glass of milk is not the only way to get your three servings of dairy each day. In fact, according to the newly released 2015 Dietary Guidelines Scientific Report, Americans are diversifying how they get their dairy—through milk, cheese and yogurt.
As a mom and registered dietitian, I understand the importance of healthy eating, along with the struggles of making healthy foods appealing. That is why cooking with dairy is such a great option.
Rather than just drinking a glass of nutrient-rich milk, try incorporating it into your favorite dish. Here are some of my favorite ways:
- Make pudding, oatmeal and grits with milk instead of water
- Switch from plain black coffee to a creamy latte
- Braise your meat in milk, like in our delectable Milk-Braised Pork Loin
- Add a luxurious creamy note to your soups by using milk instead of broth

Bonus: If you are lactose intolerant, you can simply substitute lactose-free milk for traditional milk for the same great taste and nutrition—just without the lactose!
