St. Patrick’s Day is synonymous with cheers of good luck, four-leaf clovers and of course, Irish food. However, in my house, we love to celebrate with shakes. The fizzy drink topped with creamy ice cream or frozen yogurt is something we can’t deny! But recently, we discovered a new favorite shake concoction— Egg Cream!
The name is deceiving because it does not contain eggs or cream. Instead, it is a delicious mix of milk, seltzer water and chocolate syrup. Yum!
As a Registered Dietitian, I love this treat because not only is it a delicious way to get one of the recommended 3 servings of dairy every day, it can be made with a variety of milks, all of which offer 9 essential nutrients. I prefer mine with low-fat chocolate milk and seltzer, but you can use everything from skim milk to flavored or even lactose-free milk.
To add flavor, you don’t need to stick with just chocolate syrup. Make an Irish mint chocolate version by adding peppermint extract to the original recipe. Or use strawberry milk to make a chocolate covered strawberry flavor. The options are endless!
