Six Summer Snacks for Kids

Summertime is here and the living is easy, especially if you are a parent with healthy snacks on hand!  Whether you are road tripping, kicking back poolside or enjoying a staycation, you know you will hear the words “I’m hungry- can I have a snack?”  My kids are more active than ever during the summer, making them hungrier than usual. As a working mom, I certainly don’t have the time for complicated snacks, so I keep the fridge and pantry stocked with quick and easy grab ‘n go options.  Below are six snacks you will find in our cooler this summer.

1.)    String Cheese- Convenient, portable and fun to eat!  Packed with protein, calcium and other nutrients including phosphorus and vitamin A, cheese is a nutritious and delicious summer snack.

2.)    Watermelon: Nothing is more refreshing on a hot summer day than a juicy slice of watermelon.  Not only is watermelon a good source of vitamins A and C, but it is also over 90% water, so it helps keeps kids hydrated in the summer heat.

3.)    Yogurt Tubes: Just like string cheese, yogurt tubes are a portable, convenient and a fun to eat snack that contains protein and calcium.  Try them frozen for an extra cool treat!

4.)    Popcorn: A healthy alternative to chips (if prepared the right way) and a great source of fiber. My kids love munching this during snack time.

5.)    Veggies and Hummus:  Our favorite on the go veggies include baby carrots, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and red pepper.  Offer a dip such as hummus for a splash of fiber and protein.

6.)    Flavored Milk: Refuel and rehydrate your swimmer with cold chocolate milk. Packed with important nutrients such as carbohydrates, protein, vitamin D and calcium, flavored milk should be the official beverage of summer!
