School Nutrition Directors Learn Dairy’s Important Role in Children’s Diets

The Dairy Alliance's Tracey True presented "2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and School-Aged Children" to a group of 50 school nutrition directors and staff in Lexington through the Kentucky School Nutrition Association. During the presentation, Tracey discussed the history of the dietary guidelines and why they are important to school nutrition options. She discussed results published in the newest edition of the dietary guidelines, which indicate children are not eating enough fruits, vegetables, whole grains or dairy. She stressed the importance of real dairy in children's diets, including information about the 13 essential nutrients in milk, the importance of iodine, why plant-based alternatives are not nutritionally equivalent to dairy foods, and how to manage lactose intolerance.
